Beach holidays aren’t for everyone. Some people love nothing more than chilling out with a cocktail and a good book. But for others, adventure calls! If you’re an adrenaline junkie or someone who just loves being on the move, you need an active holiday. Feel the sun on your skin and the wind in your hair with these five ideas for an action-packed trip.
Ride the waves
Surfing is a summertime favourite. Many seasoned surfers will flock to tropical destinations like Waikiki in Hawaii, or Canggu beach in Bali. But Europe shouldn’t be overlooked. Sleepy Cornwall might not seem like an adventure hotspot, but it attracts tonnes of surfers every year. Try Newquay for a party atmosphere, or Sennen Cove for more chilled vibes. Want to catch some serious Atlantic waves? Head to Sagres, the epicentre of Portuguese surf. If you’re a total beginner to surf, think about joining a surf camp. That way, you can get all the lessons and support you need while meeting loads of friendly faces!
Shred the snow
Have you ever tried snowboarding? This hugely popular sport has got adventure written all over it. First off, you get to experience rugged mountains and stunning scenery. You get to reach exhilarating speeds and take on jumps and tricks if the mood strikes. And at the end of a hard day, there’s usually some fantastic resort nightlife to be enjoyed. If summer snowsports are your thing, there are a lot of resorts to choose from. Some great options for year-round snowboarding are Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia or Zermatt in Switzerland. If you’re a beginner, look into resorts that offer affordable lessons. Be prepared for lots of falls at first, and you’ll soon get the hang of it.
Get your hiking boots on
Is there anything more beautiful than taking on the open road? Grab your hiking boots, a map and some provisions, and hit the trails. This active holiday is perfect for those who love a relaxed pace. You can hike closer to home and combine it with an awesome caravan trip. Alternatively, journey overseas for a thrilling adventure. Take in the dramatic sites and mysterious history of Macchu Picchu, on the Inca Trail in Peru. Discover breathtaking views of lakes and mountains at scenic Trolltunga, Norway. Or, take an adventure of a lifetime by trekking up to Tiger’s Nest in mystical Bhutan. If you’re new to hiking, you might feel safer by joining a tour.
Cycling holidays are amazing. You get to feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin while covering distances you couldn’t dream of doing on foot. Book with a cycle tour company if you want the security of having a guide, accommodation, and a vehicle to carry your luggage and provisions. But if you’re set on going it alone, you could try the beautiful Dolomites mountain range in Northern Italy. It’s a popular peddling destination where cyclists are well catered for. But watch out, it’s not exactly flat! For a more leisurely trip, try Holland, which is famed for its flat landscapes, lovely canals, and tulip filled fields.
